Twists, Turns, and Ties in Knots
I was born in Hong Kong to a Norwegian father and a Dutch mother, whose own father captained ships for a Dutch shipping company. I spent my early school years at a strict British school, where my class clown antics often landed me in trouble — and frequently left my tie twisted in knots.
At eight years old, my family moved to the Philippines, where I encountered memorable teachers, skipped a grade, and first discovered my passion for photography. At thirteen, after multiple coup attempts and a time of political unrest, I moved to Vancouver, Canada, to live with my aunt’s family.
Seven years later, with a degree in economics and a deeper love for adventure, I returned to Hong Kong, traveling extensively throughout Asia and Europe for work. It was during this whirlwind chapter that I met and married my incredible wife, Barbara, in Washington, D.C.
Our journey together has had plenty of its own twists and turns — from D.C. to San Luis Obispo, California, and eventually to Central Illinois. It was there, in 2001, that I photographed my first wedding, inspired by the work of an English documentary wedding photographer. I instantly fell in love with telling stories through the camera lens.
More than twenty years later, Barbara and I are proud parents to two amazing daughters — Izzie, a grad student at the University of British Columbia, and Annalise, a student at the University of Miami — and our life remains as full of adventure as it was when we first met.
Today, I travel across Canada and the U.S. to capture wedding day stories — each one unique, each one beautiful, each one a reminder that the best journeys are never straight lines.
